Driving: Our coordinates are: 17â—¦49’58.59” S, 25â—¦38’09.60” E.   From Livingstone take the Kazungula/Sesheke road out of town.   22km from Livingstone turn left onto a dirt road signposted Waterberry Lodge and follow the marker signs for 6km.

From Kazungula (the Zambezi river crossing border point between Zambia and Botswana) turn right onto the main Livingstone road.   After about 40km turn right at the signpost for Waterberry and follow the marker signs on the dirt road for about 6km.

Flying: Waterberry is 35 mins drive from Livingstone International and about 2 hours from Victoria Falls International Airport in Zimbabwe.  We normally arrange transfers to and from the airports.

It’s essential for all guests to have comprehensive medical, accident and cancellation insurance.   If you want to do adventure sports check with your insurance company that you are covered. When you arrive at Waterberry you will be asked to sign an indemnity form, which will include confirmation that you are holding a valid travel insurance policy.

Malaria prevention is extremely important.   Your anti malaria medication will need to be prescribed by your doctor so that you can start taking it before your trip.   Vaccinations such as tetanus and hepatitis are also important precautions.   As soon as you decide to travel to Zambia ask your doctor what vaccinations are recommended because some may need to be given a while in advance.   If you’re heading out on safari we suggest you bring a basic first aid kit.

All Waterberry staff are fully vaccinated.   Our Covid protocol meets the requirements of the Zambia Ministry of Health and we have adopted extra measures taken from international standards.   We are able to help organise the necessary testing for guests on departure.

It is illegal to fly drones in Zambia without a licence from the Zambian Civil Aviation Authority.

Wifi is available free of charge at Waterberry. Mobile phone signals vary but are generally reliable.

Waterberry vehicles will fetch and carry you as arranged, as will other operators’ depending on your scheduled activity.   Transfer charges will apply if they are not included in your pre-booked holiday package or your activity, and will be charged at the end of your stay.

Local Zambian currency is the Kwacha – you can only obtain Kwacha in Zambia. US Dollars are the most widely used currency and are accepted almost everywhere – including at Immigration at Livingstone Airport where you can buy your entry visa into Zambia (we recommend you bring cash for this - see Visa section below). If you need kwacha we can change US Dollars or other currency for you at Waterberry.  Exchange rates can be checked at www.xe.com.

Enquiries and reservations are managed through both the UK and Zambian offices for Waterberry (see Contact Us).  Payment for accommodation at Waterberry must be made in advance of your stay.   20% payment is required on confirmation of booking to guarantee the reservation and the balance is due 6 weeks before arrival.  For additional charges payable at the lodge (transfers, bar bills and activities) Waterberry can take cash payment in dollars, other major currencies and by credit card.  We accept Visa, Mastercard and American Express.

Cancellation 8-6 weeks before arrival date = 20% charge; 6-4 weeks = 30% charge; 4-2 weeks = 50% charge, up to 14 days before arrival = no refund.

In winter (May – mid August) days are warm and dry and nights are cold enough to need a warm jacket, warm trousers, scarf and gloves. During the summer months (late August – April) temperatures are high, the hottest usually being October at around 35⁰+.   In November to March, the rainy season, humidity is high.  Rainfall varies but tends to be short sharp showers sometimes with spectacular thunder and lightning.

Voltage 220V.  UK square 3-pin sockets (we have a supply of international adapters). Power cuts are relatively frequent and whilst we have a backup generator we do recommend that you bring a torch and extra batteries, just in case.

Most nationalities require a visa to enter Zambia.  European and North American visitors can buy visas (single and double entry) on arrival at Livingstone, Lusaka, Kazungula (from Botswana) and Victoria Falls (from Zimbabwe).  The average rate is $50 for a single entry and $80 for a multiple entry, but these rates vary for some nationalities.

In order to visit Victoria Falls from both the Zambian and Zimbabwean sides we recommend all guests ask for the KAZA VISA, which is available to buy at the border entry points in Livingstone Airport, Kazungula, Lusaka and Vic Falls in Zimbabwe.   For $50 the visa allows unlimited travel between Zambia and Zimbabwe for a period of 30 days, and also allows day trips out to Botswana.  The KAZA VISA is available to Europeans, North Americans, Australians and New Zealanders along with other nationalities - check your national information before you travel.

Residents of some other countries need to apply in advance for a visa, and everyone should check with their Zambian Embassy or High Commission before travel.  Any guest planning to cross over to Zimbabwe to see the Falls from the other side, or into Botswana for a visit to Chobe, and who cannot get a Kaza Visa,  must be sure to ask for a Multiple Entry Visa to avoid having to pay again when re-entering Zambia.

Activities

Zambezi River cruises.

A sunset cruise, drifting down the Zambezi into the setting sun, camera in hand, with sundowners and snacks, is almost certain to be your first activity during your stay with us.   You can also choose to get up early and experience dawn on the river as the mist rises and the birds awake.   You will never forget this, we promise.

Our village guide lives in the community and will show you  how rural Zambians lead their lives in this completely uncommercial setting.  You're also guaranteed to be followed by curious children!   You'll see our school and education areas and the community farm that are part funded by the village walks.

Our village guide lives in the community and will show you  how rural Zambians lead their lives in this completely uncommercial setting.  You're also guaranteed to be followed by curious children!   You'll see our school and education areas and the community farm that are part funded by the village walks.

Our expert guides will take you around the Waterberry riverbank and woodland areas to see our amazing collection of birds.   Keen birders can also visit Mosi O Tunya Park and even the Livingstone Sewage Ponds (something to make your friends jealous when you get home!).

Cruise to one of our local sandy islands for a champagne picnic, served by your personal butler, and an afternoon spent lazing, just watching the river go by and listening to the sounds of nature. When the river is high and the islands are submerged your picnic will be a lunchtime cruise.  A perfect balance to the previous energetic day spent visiting the Falls.

Livingstone was the capital of Zambia at the beginning of the 20th century, and some fascinating architecture remains.   In the Museum you can actually pull out and read David Livingstone’s handwritten letters.  At Maramaba Market you will see where local Zambians shop for food, beautiful fabrics and literally everything!

Walking the paths around The Falls is an unmatched, awe-inspiring experience.  We think everyone should see the Falls from both the Zambian and Zimbabwean sides, because they are very different experiences. . Entry fee: $20pp Zambia and $30pp Zimbabwe.   (Essential note : Make sure you buy the Kaza Visa when you come into Zambia for the first time.   This allows you to cross freely between both countries)

Throw yourself off a bridge 330 feet above the water, eh?   It's up to you - you can watch them open-mouthed or you can join in.   For some people the question is 'why would anyone do that?', for others it is 'how do I get to do that?'.  We have answers for both questions, but for hip and knee replacements the answer is always NO.

A beautiful, peaceful way to experience the Zambezi at water's eye level.   Accompanied by skilled guides to steer you through small rapids, around little islands where crocodiles are basking in the sun (and watching you), and past pods of curious hippos.

This is quite something.  After crossing over the sensational new bridge at Kazungula, which is the border between Zambia and Botswana, you will spend the day in the Chobe River and National Park - world famous for the absolutely stunning variety and quantity of animals and birds.   It's a must for anyone who's not had time to safari, and a huge treat for anyone with a camera.

A flight over Victoria Falls is a fantastic way to understand the dramatic geology of the vast waterfall and its astonishing gorges.   You can choose between the up close and personal microlight, skimming through the spray, or the thrill of flying over the Falls in a helicopter and then swooping into the gorge.  Astonishing.  A great way to complete your Falls visit.

This amusing and educational presentation of the world-famous, more-than-a-century- old, bridge - from initial concept to supremely skilled and inventive building -  is followed by the chance to walk the Engineer's Path under the bridge.  A great story, fantastic views and a serious challenge to your vertigo!

A lovely, quiet ride through the bush along the riverbank.  Wild animals are unafraid of people on horseback, and so on this gentle saunter from stables back to Waterberry you may see small game and big elephants, and you'll be paired with a horse that understands your ability and travels (mostly) at the speed you want.

This once-in-a-lifetime experience takes you to the island in the middle of the Zambezi where David Livingstone first saw The Falls.   You'll peer over the very, very high cliff edge and get the chance to swim at the top of The Falls in the Devil's Pool or the Angel's Chair (and take what will certainly qualify as some of your best-ever holiday snaps).

Walk to see the white rhino in our local national park.   This is truly an awe- inspiring, humbling experience.   Knowing that we may well be the last generations to see these astonishing animals in the wild, you'll come away feeling privileged and determined to fight for conservation.

A steam train lover's dream.   Welcome to the train, pull away from the sidings and head for sundowners on the world famous Victoria Falls Bridge, hear the fascinating story about Livingstone (the person and the town) and enjoy a 5-star dinner.  A perfect way to end a day.

Only at very low water - rafting upstream to reach the cliff, then scrambling and swimming to the amazing rock pools hewn out of the basalt over millions of years.  Swimming in the rock pools, splashing in the spray, an unbelievable experience.  And, for those with enough stamina, carrying on down and rafting the rapids.

This is THE ultimate rafting trip down the world's most challenging rapids.  The clue, as always, is in the name.  There are rapids called Stairway To Heaven, The Terminator, Oblivion, The Washing Machine, The Devil's Toilet Bowl - are you getting the idea?  The adrenaline surge of a lifetime.  Wonderful.

Conservation & Community

In 2009 Waterberry founded Tukongote Community Projects to improve educational opportunities in the nearby villages. From humble, single-classroom beginnings we have developed into a first world standard community school, with 3 preschools, a primary school, an adult teaching centre, library and burgeoning skills centre.

We support the nearby secondary school and (with the help of sponsors) send our best and brightest children to Kazungula High School, to pursue their dreams of higher education and an uplifted future.

You can experience everyday rural Zambian life and see Tukongote projects in action if you join our village walk.

It's a fascinating insight. We employ more than 40 teachers and support staff.

Our Community Shop at the lodge stocks items made locally and by supporter volunteers. 100% of sales go directly to Tukongote.

During the pandemic, with the help of donors and sponsors, we have created a community farming cooperative to provide much needed extra food for the schoolchildren and also income for community members who joined the project.

In 2019 Waterberry Community Projects Limited, supporting Tukongote, became a Registered Charity in the UK.  Guests often ask how they can support our work.

To find out more about our projects, to make a donation and to find out how donations are used go to www.tukongote.com.
