Wild Camping – we camp wild on an island for 1 night while canoeing on the Zambezi River. Wild camps have no facilities; we will need to take our own water and all equipment. Wild camping can be very enjoyable but please remember that we leave no trace of our stay and take all rubbish away with us. Toilets will be of the “dig and bury” variety. Sunway supplies all the camping equipment, except for your sleeping bag and pillow, which you need to bring. The dome tents we use are 2.2 x 2.2 x 1.8 metres and putting them up or down takes only 5 minutes. Tents have built-in insect nets. We supply mattresses, which are about 5 cm thick, warm and comfortable. The camp chairs have a backrest. You will need to bring your own towel. No Wifi.

After falling in love with the Busanga Plains, we built Chisa Busanga Camp to mimic its surrounds through beautiful architecture and environmentally conscious design.
Chisa is the Nyanja word for ‘birds nest’, and the rooms were inspired by the weaver bird nests that decorate the trees here. Sitting on a small tree-lined island, the camp uses only solar power as do the game drive vehicle and bicycles used to explore the watery dambos beyond.
Chisa Busanga Camp celebrates the natural and cultural heritage of the Busanga Plains, a place that will leave an indelible imprint on your mind, as it has on ours.

A little woodland camp, where impala and bushbuck graze and birds drink at the waterholes. This is a wild space where you sit around the evening fire listening to the sounds of nature. And you don’t leave your tent at night in case you inadvertently meet Mr Hippo grazing your personal lawn - you just wake up in the morning and look out and think was he really so close?. Imagine!
We are privileged to have wild woodlands where an abundant supply of water attracts birds and small mammals. Impala and bushbuck graze here, and a wide variety of birds find safety for feeding, drinking, nesting.
We created The Woodlands for birders who want peace and quiet to sit among the trees and observe, but it’s proved so popular that we have opened it to those wanting that special wilderness feeling without sacrificing comfort and luxury.
Guests have the service of a butler/groundsman/guard 24/7. Breakfast is served on the Woodlands lounge veranda where you can also keep cool in the heat of the day, invite friends made at the lodge for a surprise drink, or just sit and watch the birds go by.
The Waterberry restaurant, sun decks and swimming pool, all used by Woodlanders, are a short walk down sandy paths.
Our tents are hugely popular with guests loving the wild experience, but also loving the luxury furnishings, the fully fitted dressing rooms and en suite bathrooms and the private verandas surrounded by individual gardens.
Tents are double or twin, with seating inside and out and plenty of storage for
clothes and luggage. This super little hideaway is perfect for relaxing and is also available for exclusive use.

The first impression, after driving down the sandy road to reach us, is of rich green foliage, colourful flower borders and rolling lawns with thatched cottages scattered around the gardens. Then, looking through the open main lodge building with lounge, restaurant, and sun decks the Zambezi flows past with a vast wild national park on the opposite bank.
The main lodge building has a large and airy upstairs viewing lounge overlooking the river, inside and outside dining space and sociable lounging furniture on tiered decks. This is the central meeting place for guests – for briefings, for meals (although guests can choose to eat on their own verandas) and for swapping stories over drinks around the fire pit.
We’ve private areas all over the lovely grounds – you can sit on the river deck, seek shade in our upstairs lounge, watch birds from the raised platform by the dam or catch a nap on a lounger by the pool. You can be as private as you like but always within reach of your watchful team who will cater for your every need.
Our cottages are all different, colourful and stylish, all perfectly adapted to your needs – whether you want to sit and watch the river go by, or relax on your own veranda with a good book or a pair of binoculars. From the elegant architectural lines to the thoughtfully outfitted game viewing vehicles and the perfectly-positioned photographic hide in front of the camp’s private watering hole.
Located well inside the incredible South Luangwa National Park with an outlook onto a private floodplain and watering hole, this remote and elevated landscape framed is enriched by the rolling gait of giraffe, the heart-shaped nose of the puku, and the midnight whoop of the hyena.
A collaboration between its new owners, Chichele Safaris, and the Cumings Family of Chiawa Camp & Old Mondoro – the reimagined Puku Ridge is situated on one of the Park’s prime sites.
The well-known and much loved facilities, service and guiding have been upgraded to the highest of standards that the Cumings Family’s own Lower Zambezi safari camps have become renowned. Unique in design but traditional in outlook, it has been completely rebuilt with a lighter footprint.
Elements from the Luangwa bush camps of old have been combined with traditional village life and authentic, local art works complement crucial creature comforts making for one of the most appealing and welcome safari camp launches for many years.
Previous guests of the old Puku Ridge will feel that everything has changed, but nothing has changed, as many special touches from the past have been retained.

"Tsowa" means ‘new beginnings’, which is what you will find on this pristine island in the middle of the mighty Zambezi River. A surreal place, the whispers of this majestic river are broken only by occasional calls of the African fish eagle. In a camp fringed by a beautiful forest, a soft path leads to a cluster of century old baobabs. This is our safari island Tsowa, sensitively situated within the Zambezi National Park.
It is a great privilege and honour to have been awarded the concession to develop a camp on Tsowa Safari Island and for this reason every care and consideration has been taken to position the 6 eco-sensitive luxury tents to create minimal environmental impact and blend into the natural surroundings as much as possible while giving guests the chance to appreciate the trees, river, animals and birds of the Zambezi National Park.
The camp can only be accessed by pre-booked transfers. Guests are transferred in closed air-conditioned vehicles to our private entrance to the Zambezi National Park, where they will be met by a guide and transferred in an open 4x4 vehicle to the rivers edge. From here it is a quick boat trip across to the island.
This luxury modern day explorers camp offers 6 luxury tents with en-suite indoor and outdoor showers. Each tent is carefully positioned in the shade of the forest to ensure guest privacy and maximize the river views.

Chikoko Trails incorporates two small and exclusive bush camps, Chikoko Tree Camp and Big Lagoon (previously known as Crocodile River Camp). In 2022 Crocodile River Camp was relocated to the historic Big Lagoon site, overlooking an extensive lagoon from the surrounding ebony forest. Located on the west bank in the South Luangwa National Park, a few kilometres upstream from parent camp Tafika, Chikoko and Big Lagoon are only accessible on foot and offer unparalleled walking safaris – being immersed in the idyll of remotest Africa. On foot, the minutiae of the bush come to the fore: the smells; the essence of the macro world and a sense of timelessness. On foot, biggest herbivores become gentle giants as giraffes and elephants tower over you and the buffalo are now on eye level. The Luangwa's predators now become the prey as you track lions prints from the night before. It is the realness of the experience, that dash of adrenaline associated with standing downwind of an elephant and catching its unmistakable scent that make walking safaris unforgettable.

The effortless and grounded luxury that Chiawa Safaris is known for, is right here at Old Mondoro. An intimate camp of only 5 chalets, the concept of this camp is simple – to provide guests with an authentic and unedited Zambian safari, providing a “back to the bush” atmosphere that centralizes on the wildlife and wilderness experience. That disconnects you from the internet and reconnects you with nature, yourself, and your loved ones.
A destination in itself, Old Mondoro is owned and operated by the Cumings family of the pioneer Chiawa Camp, which boasts enhanced luxuries and bush-sophistication, making a combination safari of these two camps a most rewarding visit to the Lower Zambezi.
Incredible wildlife encounters at this quintessential safari camp are those only found in your wildest dreams. Under the canopy of winterthorn trees and bordering the mighty Zambezi river, wild animals are part of the camp, sharing in your daily routine. Big cat sightings (some of the most prolific leopard sightings to be had in Africa) with the magic of the water providing island-hopping buffalo and elephant, as well as an extreme concentration of hippo.
“Mondoro” in Goba language means Lion. The camp name honours a mythical white lion that used to prowl nearby – although “Old Mondoro” is long gone, his descendants still roam the wilderness of the Lower Zambezi, wild and free.

Luambe offers a remote safari in a National Park that is being restored through conservation.
The Lindsey et al. report of 2014 found Luambe National Park has the highest potential large mammal biomass per square kilometre of all Zambian National Parks! That means Luambe National Park should have the highest volume of large mammals for its size in Zambia. Tragically, the 2014 report found the park only had a staggering 5% of its wildlife potentila due to poaching and a lack of resources.
Luambe Camp & Conservation was formed to change this and over the last 6 years, has been quietly achieving amazing results. Visiting Luambe is both a remote and private Luangwa safari and gives guests the chance to see and participate in various conservation activities being done on the ground.

Mwaleshi Camp, located in the vast wilderness of North Luangwa National Park, is a 40 minute flight from Mfuwe Airport. Hidden within a scenic bend of the Mwaleshi River 10km upstream of the confluence with the Luangwa River, the camp is a truly special and remarkable place.
There are few roads in this remote area and the majority of activities are done on foot, following existing animal trails. All senses become attuned to the surrounding bush as guests experience the variations in the magical diversity of the area.
Walkers enjoy the freedom of Africas limitless expanse on foot, accompanied by an experienced manager/guide and an armed National Park scout. Thanks to the availability of a vehicle - which drops off and collects guests from the airstrip – attractions further afield can be explored, such as the Mwaleshi Falls which is located upstream of the camp.
With just four thatched chalets rebuilt annually out of natural materials, en suite bathrooms open to the stars and uninterrupted views of the spectacular Mwaleshi River, the camp offers you a genuine feeling of solitude and seclusion. Life in camp is comfortable yet refreshingly simple.

Three tented chalets overlooking the Musa River and Lake Itezhi-tezhi shoreline.
Lake Camp is the new addition to Nanzhila Safaris and perfectly compliments the Plains Camp experience. The focus of Lake Camp is exploring the Southern Kafue wildlife that is found around Lake Itezhi-tezhi. Here, the mega herbivores like elephant, buffalo and hippo are more common than down on the Plains and so the incredible diversity and variety that Nanzhila is known for delivering simply gets broader with the addition of Lake Camp. In addition to the variety of species, the open floodplains and shorelines around the edges of Lake Itezhi-tezhi make for a stunning wildlife experience.

Welcome to your unforgettable wildlife safari at Flatdogs Camp! Our Zambian safari camp provides an affordable, authentic bush gateway to the South Luangwa National Park - one of the last great wildlife wonders of the world.
Within our range of great value South Luangwa safari accommodation options, Flatdogs Camp welcomes every type of safari-goer to rest their head. There are the family-friendly Chalet Rooms, the wild and luxurious Jackalberry Treehouse, the traditional Safari Tents with 270° views, and the ultra-private Crocodile Nest.
The South Luangwa National Park is a pristine wilderness in eastern Zambia, and is part of the broader Luangwa Valley. The Valley is home to an astonishing diversity of life, including around 100 species of mammals, more than 400 bird species and over 2000 types of plants.
Added to this, there is an amazing density of game, particularly along the riverine strip. Our guests often comment that ‘there’s something around every corner.
Flatdogs is the closest camp to the Mfuwe main gate of South Luangwa National Park. All our South Luangwa safari activities are led by a fully-qualified guide, and include morning drives, night drives, and walking safaris.
The professionalism and skills of our guides are what get you to the best sightings with the fewest number of humans around. We normally limit numbers to six guests per vehicle and our guides use their guiding skills, not their radios, to find the game. You might sit listening to the sounds of the bush, alone in the wilderness, when the guide hears an alarm call. What better way to find a leopard?
The South Luangwa is one of the few parks in Africa to allow night drives, and the guides’ knowledge of animal behaviour really pays off after dark. Knowing where predators might hunt, which other predators might be around to take advantage, and how to ensure we don’t interfere with the normal behaviour of these animals is crucial to your enjoyment.

Commonly known as “The Gateway to The Kafue National Park”, Mukambi Safari Lodge is centrally located in the park, right on the banks of the stunning Kafue River. The Kafue National Park is one of the largest national parks in Africa (roughly the size of Wales at more than 22,000km²) therefore we recommend you book with us for at least a week so you have time to explore this vast park and combine time at Busanga, Fig Tree and Mukambi. However, shorter bookings of 3 to 4 nights at Mukambi will also guarantee a truly unique safari!
The lodge itself consists of a thatched building with several decks overlooking the Kafue River and offers an infinity pool for ultimate relaxation on those hot days, looking over the vast Kafue River. Upon return from your activities, relax with drink in hand in one of our lounge areas, all offering stunning views of the river. You might want to chat to one of our guides while gazing up at the stars in the night sky by our campfire. Don’t hesitate to visit our curio shop, which offers a selection of products made by the local village, or to ask for one of our massages on offer, which take place in the comfort of your room.
Finally, don’t forget to look out for the many animals, which find sanctuary around the lodge area; impalas, baboons, monkeys, elephants, hippos, even a small pride of lions, and of course our resident Wild Cat Mauw!

Shoebill Island Camp is tucked away in indigenous thicket and faces out onto the Bangweulu wetlands. Bangweulu means where water meets the sky, a perfect description for one of the most extraordinary and important wetlands in all of Africa. It is unique in that it is a community-owned protected area and is home to 50,000 people who retain the right to sustainably harvest its natural resources for their survival and livelihoods. The fish and wildlife populations were rapidly diminishing as a result of unsustainable harvesting. This all changed in 2008 when African Parks signed an agreement with the Zambian Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW) to work with the communities to sustainably manage the wetland for the benefit of both people and wildlife.
